To unlock this achievement, you must submit a piece of writing that opposes an existing opinion piece. The writing must reflect the stylistic features of the original argument.

Form: Counter Argument

  • Form must be manipulated in order to play with reader’s expectations and reinforce writer’s point of view or mount a critique of opposing position.
  • Response must make detailed reference to the stated argument.
  • Writing is extended in form
  • There is a deliberate selection of figurative and grammatical features that echo those used in the original text
  • Language devices are selected for a clear rhetorical purpose
  • Standard English diction is used throughout

Logic and Structure:

  • The opening of the piece should analyse the salient points of the opposing arguments.
  • Questions and lack of clarity in opposing arguments should be outlined in opening.
  • Points of rebuttal should be developed in detail, looking at the issue from a range of positions. Evidence should be provided to support arguments that is of equivalent valence to that in the source argument.
  • Ideas linked effectively using appropriate discourse markers
  • Main points should be developed, placed in an effective order and tailored to the critique of the opposing position.
  • Final paragraph brings closure to rebuttal

Accuracy:

  • Spelling of almost all words is consistently accurate. There are few lapses even in uncommon and technical language.
  • A confident and well developed range of sentence structures is used to add nuance and clarity to the argument.
  • Punctuation features are consistently used accurately and in some cases help develop the impact of the argument.
