To unlock this badge you must capture and analyse a distinct spoken language form and explain how a range of linguistic and paralinguistic forms influence the meaning of what is said.

Logic

  • You must explore at least 4 different spoken language features, such as:
    • Language effects like grammatical patterns, neologism, technical terms or specific idiolect
    • Discourse markers like adjacency pairs, verbal fillers and agenda-setting.
    • Aural (Prosodic) elements like accent, volume and speed
    • Figurative techniques like rhyming slang, repetition.
    • Para-linguistic elements like facial expression, gesture, eye contact
  • You must explain the effect of all selected features, supported by quoted examples from original transcripts
  • Links must be made between these features and the meaning the discourse, as well as the age, ethnicity, social group, place of origin, status or roles of the participants

Transcript Analysis

  • Original transcripts must be generated from live spoken conversation
  • The transcripts must be annotated with elements from at least 4 of the following categories
    • Language effects like grammatical patterns, neologism, technical terms or specific idiolect
    • Discourse markers like adjacency pairs, verbal fillers and agenda-setting.
    • Aural elements like accent, volume and speed
    • Figurative techniques like rhyming slang, repetition.
    • Para-linguistic elements like facial expression, gesture, eye contact

Form

  • The response can take the form of a presentation, extensive contribution to a discussion, an essay or a thesis defense

Domain

  • Suitable spoken language settings include: Your own conversations, football commentaries, London street slang, Cockney rhyming slang, The language of politics.
