To Sail upwind you must be able to successfully demonstrate taking following the “RYA method”
You must have a clear view looking forward at all times; show correct hand grips for tiller and mainsheet; and not swap hands until after each tack is made.
Your course made good to windward should neither be too far off the wind, nor involve you pinching towards the wind, such that the front of the sail (the luff) flaps more than four times.
